  • Lordswood Rd route problems

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

There is no reason for the plethora of ``cyclists dismount'' signs (13.4.1) and 90-degree turns (5.4.2) on this route.

It should be improved to remove the latter, and to render the former unnecessary, e.g. by adding raised tables across accesses.

  • Camulodunum Way Cycleway is sub-LTN 1/20

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

The white line (6.5.2-3) segregated ~1.5m wide bidirectional cycleway (Table 5-2 & 5-3) along Camulodunum Way (CW) is obstructed by lamp columns.  As such it doesn't comply with LTN 1/20.

The width should be increased to the recommended unconstrained minimum of 3m, proper allowance should be made for the lamp columns (or they should be moved), and demarcation should be improved from the obsolete white line.

  • Cycle priority over 202025 access

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

On 202025 there will be a shared use path behind the hedge along Berechurch Hall Road but the remaining vehicle access will present a barrier to anyone who wishes to use the toucan crossing.

There should be cycle/pedestrian priority (Fig 10.13 eg1 eg2) over the remaining vehicle access.

  • Berechurch Hall Road Speed Limits

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

Berechurch Hall Road is a busy road that is becoming increasingly residential West of the junction with Berechurch Road (J1).  The speed limit has been reduced from 40mph to 30mph, except for a section of 40mph East of J1.

To improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, the current speed limits should be reduced by 10mph (Fig 4.1) and traffic lanes correspondingly narrowed (7.2.5-7).

  • Camulodunum Way - Baronswood Way Missing Link

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

The sub-LTN 1/20 white line (6.5.2-3) segregated bidirectional cycleway (Table 5-2 & 5-3) along Camulodunum Way (CW) and Baronswood Way (BW) are not connected, leaving unconfident cyclists travelling North/South along CW via the toucan crossing from the new development 202025 unable to continue North to the Town Centre, as advertised in planning documents.

The gap could be easily filled to the existing standard on CW/BW via footway conversion.

  • Ipswich and Harwich Road Roundabouts

Created by Steven Moseley // 2 threads

The scheme will see the replacement of the double roundabouts located at Ipswich Road and Harwich Road with a single roundabout at each location. The carriageway between Ipswich Road and Harwich Road junctions will also be widened to accommodate two formal lanes in each direction. The scheme will include upgrading existing pedestrian crossings to signal controlled crossings and general improvements to the current off-carriageway cycle and footway provisions.

The scheme will improve the performance of these two key intersections on the A133 and renewal of the infrastructure will reduce maintenance costs. It will also improve the existing highway assets including the strengthening of two retaining walls, one between Ipswich Road roundabout and the adjoining railway line and another between Ipswich Road roundabout and the Waitrose Car Park. The Scheme has also supported the Cowdray Bridge refurbishment, now being progressed separately through the structures capital maintenance programme.

  • Local Cycling Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) consultation

Created by Steven Moseley // 2 threads

This LCWIP consultation should be seen as the first stage of a process to implement LCWIPs by Essex County Council. They ensure that a long-term approach can be taken to develop local cycling and walking networks, ideally over the next 10-year period, and form a vital part of the Government’s strategy to increase the number of trips made on foot or by cycle.

  • Former ABRO site

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

The ABRO site (now called the DSG) forms part of the Defence Estate and was used as a military vehicle repair facility. The site was vacated in about 2019 and has not been used since that time. The Defence Estates have decided to dispose of the site as it is no longer required for military purposes.

  • Middlewick

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is investing in new military firing range capabilities for Colchester Garrison which will release Middlewick Ranges for disposal. This presents an opportunity for the site to contribute towards Colchester’s need for new housing, and the land has been identified in the draft Colchester Local Plan as being suitable for up to 1,000 new homes and supporting local infrastructure.

  • South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP)

Created by Steven Moseley // 0 threads

Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) were set up by Government in 2011 to identify and support local strategic growth priorities, encourage business investment and promote economic development. This approach puts businesses in the driving seat and empowers the private sector to determine its own priorities.

The South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) is a genuine partnership for growth between business, government and education. We put the role of enterprise – as the driving motor of the economy – at the heart of everything we do; and we work in partnership with central government and its key agencies to pursue and attract major investment into the South East to deliver significant economic growth.

One of 38 LEPs established by the government, our role is to forge a partnership which properly understands the economic challenges and opportunities of our area, encourage an environment which delivers prosperity and to be directly accountable to local people and local businesses. LEPs decide what the priorities should be for investment in roads, buildings, and facilities in the area as part of an integrated approach to growth and infrastructure delivery.

We represent the largest LEP area in England outside London, in terms of population and economic output, and cover an area encompassing the local authority areas of East Sussex, Essex, Kent, Medway, Southend and Thurrock.

  • Transport East, Sub-National Transport Body

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

In March 2018 Transport East was launched, as a new Sub-National Transport Body to deliver a collective vision for the future of transport in Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.

As a partnership, we bring together the local transport and planning authorities, and business leaders with Network Rail and Highways England. We enable the region to speak with one voice on the transport investment needed to drive transformational growth and improve the quality of life for all that live and work in the region.

Why do we need Transport East?

As one of seven Sub-national Transport Bodies covering England, Transport East will develop a Transport Strategy and Delivery Plan for the region which ensures that transport fully supports its members shared ambitions for economic growth, quality of life and prosperity.

  • Colchester General Hospital

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

The General is Colchester's District Hospital and has an A&E department.  Over time it has agglomerated services from the various sites across Colchester that have closed, including those on Lexden Road and on Severalls.

The transport challenges the Hospital faces include that:

    • its main vehicle access is on a residential road
    • although it is serviced by bus routes it is not near or well integrated with transport hubs
    • local cycling provision is poor and in particular the junctions around North Station amount to a significant barrier to cyclists travelling from South Colchester
