  • Reserved land adjacent to Northern Approach Road

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

When Northern Approach Road was built land was set aside with a view to providing segregated bus lanes in the future.  It's not clear what current plans are, if any exist.

Provision for cyclists should also be made on what is an important route between the Town Centre and North Station, and the Hospital, Mile End, the A12 J28 Park and Ride, and Severalls Business Park.  e.g. Cambridge's Guided Busway also has a shared use path alongside.

  • Wellesley Road

Created by Will Bramhill // 1 thread

1960s roadbuilding seared through the town. Modern road planners have already provided a good toucan crossing between Wellesley Road and Crouch Street West across Southway/Lexden Road. Providing a better ramp from Wellesley Road would help facilitate this.

Essex Housing is redeveloping the Essex County Hospital site as housing. The company has agreed various cycling measures as part of this scheme. It has allocated £25,000 towards remodelling the Wellesley Road/Creffield Road/Maldon Road junction. Gwyn Owen, head of Essex Housing, has agreed that any money left over can be put towards a new, wider ramp. There may also be funds from the Local Highways Panel.

  • Meander Mews/Rouse Way shared path stumps

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

Thanks to planning hiccups in the 90s and 00s, there is a missing section of the path between Rouse Way and Meander Mews that prevents it from being used as an alternative for walkers and cyclists to Cowdray Avenue, or as part of leisure routes, e.g. a riverside loop.

  • A120 to A133 Link Road and Rapid Transit System

"Linking the A120 and A133 with a new road will unlock land to provide housing and business space, improving connectivity locally and within the wider region. It will serve a new Park and Choose site and manage traffic congestion going to Colchester Town Centre, the University of Essex and its Knowledge Gateway Technology and Research Park.

A Rapid Transit System that will prioritise public transport on a key route through Colchester. It will enable housing and business growth, allowing new and existing residents to benefit from frequent, high-quality, reliable transport connecting to the key destinations within the town. These types of system have proved successful in other towns and cities, helping create a shift away from car travel. A recently implemented example of this is the Belfast Rapid Transit Glider.

The system will service a new Park and Choose site on the proposed new community east of Colchester and help to better connect future growth areas with the rest of the town."

  • Proposed East Colchester Garden Community

Created by Steven Moseley // 2 threads

"Braintree, Colchester and Tendring Councils along with Essex County Council joined together to put forward plans for three new settlements built to Garden City Principles.

The three sites based west of Braintree, on the Braintree / Colchester border and on the Colchester / Tendring border could deliver up to 43,000 new homes along the North Essex A120 corridor with significant employment opportunities and transformational new infrastructure over the next 50 years."

In May 2020 the planning inspector found the other two proposed settlements to be unsound, leaving East of Colchester as the only one of the three that could proceed.

  • Northern Gateway Proposals

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

Turnstone Estates is pleased to present updated plans for a state of the art leisure facility at the Northern Gateway, Colchester.  We want the local community to be able to have their say in advance of a revised planning application being made to Colchester Borough Council.  This is to ensure that local input can be fully considered and addressed prior to the submission of the updated application.

  • Barrier put up in Bourne Ct. shared use path

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

This developer [1] has put up this barrier in a shared use path important to local cyclists (c.f. the Campaign's original objections), apparently following complaints that the path was being used as a “cut through” by motor cyclists.

Clearly, this constitutes a real problem for cyclists and wheelchair users.

  • Crouch Street West contraflow spur used as further parking

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

The, albeit contrived, design expects cyclists travelling East (from or across Rawstorn Rd.) into Crouch Street to use this spur to cross to the opposite ("shared use") pavement to avoid the angled parking along the North side of the street.  Unsurprisingly, the spur isn't well used, while the short stay spaces are often full, so the spur is regularly used for parking.

  • Cyclist access to Maldon Road from Creffield Road

Created by Stuart Johnson // 1 thread

Currently there is no entry from Creffield Road to Maldon Road, this means cyclists have to divert via Inglis Road which is a poor junction for cyclists. A request has been submitted for changes to the juction to let cyclists enter Maldon Road from Creffield Road. It's understood that Cllr Sue Lissimore has subimtted this to the Local Highways Panel (LHP).

  • DfT Policy Paper - Inclusive Transport Strategy

Created by Matthew // 1 thread

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/inclusive-transport-strategy

Lots of interesting stuff about inclusive transport regarding trains, buses, cars, public realm, streets and yes a bit about cycling too. Quotes:

    Shared Space:

8.11 While we consider CIHT and DPTAC’s recommendations and how to take them
forward, we are requesting that local authorities pause any shared space schemes
incorporating a level surface they are considering, and which are at the design stage.
We are also temporarily suspending Local Transport Note 1/11. This pause will allow
us to carry out research and produce updated guidance.

    Objectives regarding Cycling:

    • Update Local Transport Note 2/08, which sets out the Department’s guidance to
local authorities on designing safe and inclusive infrastructure for cyclists, to take
account of developments in cycling infrastructure since its publication in 2008 and
the responses to the draft AAP consultation and publish a revised version by early
    2019;
    • By 2020, explore the feasibility of amending legislation to recognise the use of
cycles as a mobility aid71 in order to increase the number of disabled people
    cycling.
